Colnago Super Pui

This was my first customized build.

Bought from the proceeds of a RIH frameset I turned into a ‘fixie-conversion’ and sold on.

It had a Dura Ace 7400 group on it, but the left hand shifter was not functioning well, so I upgraded.

I got a DA 7400 seatpost and headset, and put DA 7700 on, the same as Rabobank used.

I’m not sure if it’s an Slx tubed ‘Spiral Conic’.

It was without a Columbus decal when I got , so after looking around on the net,I saw similar bikes entitled ‘Spiral..’

that did not have the crimped down tube normal associated with the model, hence my assumption.

I should really undo the bb to look for the tell tale internal spirals.

I changed the saddle to a rolls, my butt couldn’t get on with the Brooks on longer rides.

Colnago Master Olympic

My first Colnago Master,

A ’94 Olympic

This had a mixed up group when I got it, lower end Campagnolo gearing, Shimano drive.

I stripped it, and discovered the driveside dropout and derailleur hanger was bent.

I found a good bike shop who managed the straighten it, then I customized.

Chorus 10 speed ergo group, and the stem and bars were a lucky find.

When you’re on this on a sunny day, it’s a head-turner.

I finally managed to find the right forks

Head office has resurrected the red decor scheme for the Colnago Master 30th Anniversary

http://www.colnago.com/master/.

Shock of Shocks!

the chain seized up the rear derailleur

and sheared off it’s hanger

I annihilated myself with 6 cans of beer to get over the shock and heartache .

Those wiser than I in the way of the Velo ( Velo – Tao ?) told me

I should be able to get the hanger TIG welded back with minimal cosmetic damage,

and that the problem has happend to a million road bikes.

But why mine?

Arrrgghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Progress reports will follow….
well, what do you do when your heart is broken?

Get a new one!

About a week later I managed  to get my hands 0n a ’96

Olympic same size, same decor!

The ’96 had one owner from new, and had been in his garage the last few years,

my old ’94 model is on the left, the’96 has bigger tubing, and the recesses in the crimped areas are less concave.

002

It came with Shimano 600 Tricolor, and Ultegra shifters.

I found a used Campagnolo Chorus 10 speed rear mech to replace the damaged one,

and will donate everything from the ’94 on to it.

I wasn’t happy with the wear on the brake surface of the black Campagnolo Omega rims,

so I contacted Nigel at Campoldy.co.uk and got some silver Omega V rims.

Nigel is an absolute Gent and enthusiast , with extensive experience and is willing to help,

I got the ’94 back

TIG welded, and I’m happy with the finish as it caused a minimum of cosmetic damage to the frame,

sold, and shipped to Japan!

On the ‘new’ Master, I wanted to change the shifters,as the current set has some cosmetic wear and tear marks,

but none yet, those I have seen in good condition have been overpriced.

I’ll say it again,an unbelievably fortunate find, same colour scheme as my old one, but in pretty much pristine condition.

I just have to build the wheels now.

I managed to get some nos Campagnolo 10 speed shifters at the 11th hour, just before completion

Colnago Master Team Buckler

This is the picture of it as I found it

/\ June ’91

It was a lucky find.

I bought this off someone who got if from a Buckler Team mechanic.

The gentleman said his wife rode less than 500km on it.

Full Suntour Superbe Pro ( Buckler Team standard spec)

3TTT ‘Ernesto Colnago’ signature stem

I sourced some  NOS  Superbe Pro pedals, and found Superbe Pro Lever hoods

just got to find the right toe and bottle cages now….

The Suntour Superbe Pro gearing and drive is smooth as silk to ride with, no wonder the legendary Sheldon Brown regards it so highly

Colnago Lux Dream Rabobank

Here’s one I’ve been riding most frequently at the moment-my winter bike

Colnago Rabobank Lux Dream, Dura Ace 7700

I bought the frameset and group really cheap, and the guy I bought it off said it was Johnny Hoogerland’s. Given that the Tour was on at the time, and poor old Johnny had shredded his shorts, I took the vendor’s comments with a pinch of salt.

Then I found this site

http://www.camach.nl/

with this image

The decal on the drive side fork has the same wear in each picture, could it be?

It rides beautifully, I usually ride old Italian steel, but this cracker I’ve ridden through the winter without worrying about rust or paint corrosion.

A future classic methinks.

Above post it’s first event with me on it-110km

rear derailleur jammed up twice, there was quite a bit of detritus on the road and bad rain at times, so maybe that’s why,

rectified itself though, and was comfortable for the sub 4 hours it took.

Cleat screws disappeared, so when I stopped, my foot got stuck and I made like Mr Bean and keeled over sideways.

facelift with Flite saddle  and Chris King headset donated from bikes I traded,

crank set, rd, and shifters were also changed,

bar tape temporary!

The frame was always too big, so when I got a chance to get one in my size from an ex Rabobank under 23 team member , I snapped it up, and sold the old frameset

The ‘new’ one has a Rabobank team decal with the riders name on it..

I have some WH 7701 wheels, and I think I’ll add a longer stem to get the same geo as my C50,I like the old bar tape, it just gets so grubby!
