Colnago Super Pui

Got this in the summer, Colnago Super Pui, Tange tubes, circa 1994.

Vendor said he picked it up in Italy, found in the back of and old bike shop, the windmill decal on the rear of the seat tube is from a Dutch retailer, hard to see how an Italian bike was sold in Italy by a shop from Holland, I think more likely the vendor bought in the U.K.

1985 Hutch Trickstar

Vintage bikes, road, track, mtb, etc have been reaching premium prices these last few years.

I’ve been keeping an eye on vintage bmx bikes, when I was a lad, my parents got me a second hand Diamond Back (they bought my brother a brand new one, maybe because I was no good at school), and lusted after GT’s, Haro’s and especially Hutch Trickstars, during a recent online auction browse, I found this exquisite piece, restored by a bmx collector in the U.K….

The components are certainly a mixed bunch…

Dura ace 7400 front and rear dérailleur crankset, headset and seatpost.

Shimano 600 brakes tri color.

Cinelli stem and aero bar

Shimano bar end shifters

Shimano 105 brake levers

Shimano 105 front wheel

Shimano 600 rear wheel ”

Lance Armstrong’s 1995 team Motorola Caloi eddy Merckx MX leader. 56cm.

The bike has been used and raced by lance Armstrong during the 1995 season. ”

This bicycle certainly is a part of pro road racing history, but I wonder if it will achieve it’s nearly $10k

buy it now price, given how far Armstrong fell from grace after being proven a cheat?

Eddy Merckx Professional, (fully pantographed ), circa 1983

This was possibly part of my greatest ‘shed finds’ to date, bought as part of a job lot, which included a damaged Alan roadbike, a Gazelle Champion Mondial AA frameset , Gazelle Champion Mondial AB roadbike with Campagnolo Victory gruppo…and a 35 litre rucksack full of Campagnolo.

I paid a modest 150 Euro for the lot, and had a mission and a half getting home as I travel without car.

I took everything by tram and train home, and had to walk with the rucksack, a frame over each shoulder, and a bike in each hand.I think it was the euphoria of the find that kept me marching .

I initially turned up at the vendor’s home to buy the Alan and the Gazelle Champion Mondial AA,when I arrived I was greeted by a kind lady and her male friend, and was told the lady’s husband had past away, but had been a bicycle enthusiast. When the deal had been concluded, the lady told me her late husband would have been happy the items ended up with me.

Full Eddy Merckx pantographed Campagnolo Super Record gruppo.

The rear triangle stays were really quite corroded, the frame actually sounded like a set of maracas if you shook it due to loose particles inside, so as the frame was too big for me, I sold it.

Soon after, I managed to find another Eddy Merckx Professional, in my size and in better condition..

The Professional model comes with De Rosa fork crowns, as the brand collaborated with Eddy’s factory in production..

I will use yellow Benotto bar ribbon, Campagnolo gum lever hoods, and either a suede or yellow Concor Super Corsa saddle, and I will build a wheelset.

Alan Super Record Cyclocross (CX)

Well, after completing the recent Alan Super Record build, and enjoying the ride quality so much, I couldn’t resist the chance to get an Alan Super Record CX frame set when the opportunity arose…

Fortunately it came with a Campagnolo headset, unsure if Nuovo or Super Record, and I think the in situ bb is Shimano, I will build with a Campagnolo Nuovo Record gruppo, possibly 1×6 speed.

The top tube is flattened in the mid section, to enable easier carrying on the shoulder over obstacles .

Alan Super Record

Alanil_L

This was initially a salvage project, after I found this early to mid ’80’s Alan Super Record left to rot in a garden…

002

without decals, I cleaned the frame up, sadly there were quite a few scratches,

010

the drive side down tube shifter boss was missing..

007

and I noticed a pair of hairline cracks across the seat stay caps..

which pretty much meant the frame is a write off. I could perhaps have sought a machinist’s help in making new stay caps, but did not relish the idea of removing the old.

I then came across an earlier Alan Super Record frame, with lug cut outs, which was the right size for the spare forks…

004

I had a Campagnolo Victory 7 speed gruppo waiting, (all bar the brake levers),a Campagnolo C Record headset, and as the bike is destined to be a commuter/rain bike, decided I would use combined brakes and shifter units on drop bars…

001

(Pictured in commuter mode with lights and spd pedals)

As the frame is an earlier model, the rear spacing is 126mm.

The Campagnolo “brifters” are in fact 8 speed, which would need 130mm rear spacing, or an OLD hub,but they are also compatible with a 7 speed freewheel, which is what I made do with until I make a suitable 8 speed wheel set…here’s some more pictures with Campagnolo Victory toe cage pedals…

The gruppo is used, which I’m comfortable with as it gives an overall “original condition” finish.

I always though that the name ‘Alan’ is an amalgamation of Aluminium Anodised, but it is in fact from ALberto and ANna Maria Falconi, the brand owner Lodovico Falconie’s children’s  first names.

The Alan company launched in 1972, and also built frames for other brands, including Colnago

Why?

Whilst browsing an on-line auction site, I stumbled across this senselessness…

nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

it’s a Colnago Dream road bike, utterly defaced ,

blue tyres, shit saddle ,colour coded stem, rise-able risers, seat post and clamp, and the pedals?

just plain insulting.

$_8nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn5

And the colour coded chain guard, I mean, really?

If Ernesto saw this I bet his little feet would curl up in horror…
