Rene Herse Radonneur, circa 1973

Rene Herse (1908-1976) is considered by some as one of the worlds best frame builders, very rarely do his original bikes come on the market, this fine example has recently surfaced…

Very rare De Rosa Mountain bike, Campagnolo Record OR

I was browsing through the online inventory of Brick Lane Bikes, when I saw this for sale… (a veritable unicorn!)…De Rosa Mountain bike with mostly Campagnolo Record OR gruppo…I popped into the shop a few weeks back and had a chat with the proprietor, Jan, regarding my Cinelli The Next Machine , which had Campagnolo Record OR

The rear mech is actually Campagnolo Olympus and and the tyres are O.G. Panaracer Timbuk 2’s..

This is probably one of the rarest Milanaese mtb’s currently on the market, you tend to see Colnago Master and the Cinelli Max OR Machine range MTB’s surface on the market now and again, but this is the first De Rosa MTB I have seen available.

The price is not too bad in my opinion, so if you fancy it, have a look on line , or even better, go and see Jan himself at BLB (and say Saarf sent you!)

Good luck with the sale Jan!

Rare Franco Ballerini Colnago Mapei Crono

This is currently on the market, a Mapei Crono owned by the late, great Franco Ballerini

525x525px-LL-9d1f8e69_vbattach11649

Franco Ballerini (11 December 1964 – 7 February 2010) was an Italian road racing cyclist.

Born in Florence, his greatest exploits as a rider came with his two victories in the cycling classic Paris–Roubaix, riding for the Mapei cycling team. In 1993 he was beaten on the line by Gilbert Duclos-Lassalle in an exciting Paris–Roubaix finale. Also on his palmarès or list of accomplishments there are other one-day races such as Omloop Het Volk and Paris–Brussels.

Ballerini then became manager of the Italian national cycling squad, winning the 2002 World Championships with Mario Cipollini and the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens with ex-teammate Paolo Bettini. In 2006, 2007 and 2008 he won the World Championships with Paolo Bettini and Alessandro Ballan.

On 7 February 2010, Ballerini, a rallying fan, was seriously injured during a race in Larciano where he was participating as co-driver/navigator for professional driver Alessandro Ciardi. He later died of his injuries at the Pistoia city hospital. He was 45 years old.

He was honored by race organizers in 2010

the frame has some exquisite welds, and appears to be a custom model for the Mapei GB rider

Colnago Oval CX

There’s been a number of Colnago Oval CX roadies on the market this year, this one recently appeared on a certain on-line auction site for a reasonable price…

also noteworthy, the Colnago pantographed seat post is a smaller size in diameter compared the usual 27.2cm for steel Colnago bikes…

Vintage Eddy Merckx Professional, full pantograph, circa 1983, Gazelle Champion Mondial AA Special and an Alan circa 1985

One my most recent bike buy, I picked up quite a haul.

I initially turned up at the vendors house to collect two framesets , one being this Gazelle Champion Mondial, which came with Gazelle pantographed down tube shifters…

010 017

and an Alan, circa 1985 which came with a Campagnolo pantographed Super Record 25mm (!!) seat post.

The vendor was a very nice Lady, who said the frames belonged to her husband, who had passed away.

She told me he was a keen rider, so I asked if she had anything else, as I saw some wheels sticking out of tarpaulin in her garden, and a decent sized shed.

She said she did, and I lifted the tarpaulin and discovered a Gazelle Champion Mondial AB with Campagnolo Triomphe, although rusted and with a seat post stuck right up to the seat clamp, and this, an Eddy Merckx Professional with full pantographed stem and Campagnolo Super Record gruppo !

The rear triangle was very corroded outside and in, as there are particles moving inside, and as it’s too big for me,  I will pass it on, and keep hold of the gruppo for now. When I got in the shed, I found enough Campagnolo components to fill a reasonably sized rucksack, so I paid, thanked her profusely, and headed off home.

saarf@Critical Mass, London,26/9/14

I attended the London bike Critical Mass this evening, quite a turnout!

009

I turned up on the Colnago Rabobank Lux Dream CX

(try saying that after a few Red Stripe beers!)

The event is every last Friday of the month, and starts at the South Bank by the National Theater, on the saarf side of the River Thames..

006 007

cyclists turned up from 18.30, some with sound systems, and set of around 19,30, across London’s Waterloo bridge…

016 017

010 014

then we went through the underpass on the right hand lane of the other side…

026 027

which, regrettably , is where I suffered a battery fail following this shot…

029

we cut across to Oxford Circus, did the length of Oxford street, down to the Notting Hill area, across to Kensington, then Knightsbridge, finishing up outside Buckingham Palace.

Here’s a link to Mass

www.londoncriticalmass.org

Who are we? What are our aims?

We are not sure, opinions seem to differ. There are probably as many aims of CM as there are participants. Each person comes there with his or her own idea of what it’s about, and the sum of this makes up the Mass. We have no organisers and no planned routes and this website does not try to be representative of CM in any way.

Critical Mass achieved its international name following the first ever ride in San Francisco back in 1992, where it was christened ‘Commute Clot’. It was then “noted that, in China both motorists and bicyclists had an understood method of negotiating intersections without signals. Traffic would “bunch up” at these intersections until the back log reached a “critical mass” at which point that mass would move through the intersection”. Film ‘Return of the Scorcher’ also features the scene which led to the adoption of the name “Critical Mass” for the rides which now occur around the world.

The London monthly rides started in April 1994. 1995-96 reports. Videos from the 90s. It isn’t just for cyclists, sometimes there are wheelchairers, skateboarders, roller bladers, roller skaters and other self-propelled people. Cycle sound systems often play music on the ride.”

Colnago Dream Cyclocross (CX) Rabobank Team

After the heartache of letting the Dual go due to size issues, I got lucky…

I managed to get a Colnago Dream CX, in the exact same Rabobank Team decor as my Lux Dream roadie!

(pictured more or less as found)

005

It came with Rabobank Team spec Dura Ace 7700 , apart from Ultegra 6700 crankset , Shimano wheels, and unknown calipers, I changed the stem, saddle and bar tape
