Eroica Montalcino 2022

Eroica Montalcino 2022

I went to this at the end of May, and took this Eddy Merckx Professional circa 1982, with a Campagnolo Victory Eroica spec set up (compact type).

Eddy Merckx Professional 1982

It was good to bump into old friends, Eugenio Simoncini was in a bar so we had a Spritz…

E Simoncini

Eugenio is the third generation of his family working in the family company building artisan frames in Tuscany. This ribbed / ‘stellar’ tubed model he silver brazed and finished in cromovelato…

This was his own bike, for the long route, and with an ‘Eroica’ set up…

I also bumped into Libero Colombini , a heroic Eroica veteran , with 12 long route rides under his belt…

I also bumped into Roberto, aka King Carube…

The Colnago stall was good, nice to see the guys. They were kind enough to give some lugs , and a Gilco tube…

The ride start on Sunday…

I chose the 150 km route, and 90 or so into it , I crashed on a gravel descent…

I got up and carried on, until I came by a man in a van on the road, who was kind enough to put what bandages he had on the wound. Then I carried on to the finish line…

When I finished I got the wound dressed by a kind ambulance crew…

The right side of the bars suffered a bit of gravel rash unfortunately, but I managed to polish out the brake lever scratches some time later…

My jersey handled the impact the most impressively. It was like nothing happened. I designed it as a Giro D’ Italia Maglia Rosa tribute, and it was made by 3M Caverni from Firenze. Available on pre-order…

Once I was bandaged up, I enjoyed the rest of the afternoon…

Eddy Merckx Professional circa 1982

I picked this up last summer . The Europe team rode these models in same block yellow, and they were listed in the catalog of the time

I wanted it for L’Eroica, it had to be able to fight the good fight on the strada bianca and hills, so I opted for the Campagnolo Victory gruppo. The drive side has the smallest bcd, enabling a ‘compact’ type set up.

Silvio’s Cycled

I had the pleasure of meeting Silvio, the founder of Cycled ( https://cycledproject.com/ ), at two Eroica events. The Prosecco Hills gravel ride was the first, and he told me he’d spent quite a while living in London. Back in Italy, he started his circular economy business, crafting used bicycle tyres into belts and other accessories.

Eroica Britannia x Goodwood Revival 2021

I was lucky to be one of around 100 who managed to get a free 3 day pass for the inaugural Eroica Britannia x Goodwood Revival event back in September , 2021.

My good friend , cycling journo (Rouleur) and bike technician extraordinaire Rohan Dubash (a.k.a. Dr D) was also there , and it was good to ride with him. I took my ’85 Colnago Nuovo Mexico, and wore the S.I.R.C.C. maglia rosa jersey I made in collaboration with 3M Caverni, Firenze.

The U.K. organiser , Tim and head of social media, David, asked me if I’d like to join them on a recon ride on Saturday, of course I said yes. We were filmed for the events social media outlets…

My mate Rohan and I also made the Goodwood page..

Tim made a wise choice partnering with Goodwood. The brand has a strong ‘mend and make do’ ethos, embracing sustainability.

Colnago Tecnos 1996

Finally managed to get one of these , with the help of my friend , legendary Colnago collector and enthusiast , from Eindhoven , Mr Maurice Wiels , man , owe him a tall beer or too for helping a brother out .

The frame is in the iridescent purple/pink and metallic grey , with hints of blue and green .

I have read in a number of places and been told by fellow owners it was the lightest steel frame Colnago made , with an advisory rider weight limit of 80kg .

Came with a mixed Shimano group , the wheels are Mavic SUP ceramic rims on Dura Ace 7700 hubs , so I will keep them and change the other parts to suit .
